Types Of Cows

Cow or cattle are mammals that belong to a large family of animals called Bovidae, which includes sheep, goats, Bisons, and antelopes. This four-legged creature with a large muscular body, long tails, and hooves.

These animals are often referred to as ruminants, or cud chewers because of the way they digest their food. How cattle feed allows the animals to digest tough, fibrous plants, which many other animals cannot digest. This is especially important because more than half of the world’s agricultural lands cannot produce food crops. However, the land can produce grasses and other vegetation used by cattle.

Cattles have been selected over time to do specific work. It has specialized traits. Beef Cattles are for high-quality meat, Dairy cattle are for milk production. And dual purpose cattle are for both meat and milk.

Beef Cattle

Beef is an important agricultural product, especially in the USA. Several breeds are raised for meat. To produce a high -quality beef that is flavorful and nutritious, cattle producers often breed different varieties together. The breeds are Brahman, Angus, Hereford, Polled Hereford, Charolais, and Simmental.

A highly specialized industry has developed to produce beef, especially in the united states, each phase in production usually takes place on a different farm or ranch. The phases generally consist of cow-calf, grower, and feedlot operations. Other agribusinesses, including packing companies, are also an important part of the beef industry.

  • Hereford and Angus- produce lean meat as well mixed with fat
  • Charolais – well muscled
  • Brahman – has a strong ability to resist diseases and parasites.

Dairy Cattle

The other thing about the cows is the help provided for the dairy industry. Cheese and yogurt are just two nutritious foods that originate with milk from dairy cattle. Dairy cattle have been selected over time for their ability to efficiently convert grasses and grains into milk, rather than into a large number of muscles. In fact, among domestic livestock, dairy cattle are the most efficient at producing protein and energy from their food.

In the United States dairy industry, one cow’s average yearly production is nearly 16000 pounds of milk that contains 528 pounds of high-quality protein. the breed named Holstein is a top-volume milk producer. It is followed by the Jersey, which is prized for the high percentage of butterfat in its milk rather than for the amount produced. Other common dairy breeds include Guernsey, Ayrshire, and brow swiss.

    • Brown Swiss – milk is often used to make Cheese
    • Guernsey -yields a thick, creamy milk
