The Brahma breed was developed in the United States in the mid-19th century. They are believed to have been cross-bred from large-sized chickens imported from China with the Chittagong breed of India. The Brahmas were named after the Brahmaputra River in India.

Brahmas are beautiful chickens that are strong, hardy, and resilient to all climate types. They have a thick feathered coat that covers their shanks and even toes. This enables the chicken to withstand extremely cold conditions. In addition, their pea combs are small so that they don’t get easily frostbitten.

Brahmas are easy to contain and manage, especially if you are a novice in chicken farming. They also withstand confinement, unlike other breeds. They also cannot fly very high due to their large size.

Brahmas are commonly considered to be the largest chicken breed of all. They are known as the Gentle Giant. And in addition, they are also known to be the calmest and gentlest breed. They weigh approximately 9-12lbs.

Golden Laced Brahmas: Egg Production

Brahmas are extremely valuable in the poultry industry. They lay large, uniformly brown eggs. They lay approximately 150-300 medium to large-sized eggs per year depending on the string. They are natural brooders and make good mothers.

Golden laced Brahmas like all Brahmas are excellent layers even during the winter. Most of their eggs are produced between October to May. Hens get broody at the onset of summer and sit in their nests devotedly.

Most Brahma chicken types that are sold at hatcheries today will lay around 200-250 eggs per year. Some strains of Brahmas like the golden laced Brahma are specifically bred for their beauty more than their egg-laying worth. Hence, these birds may lay about 150 eggs per year.

Brahma chickens were originally bred for meat. but people became more interested in their looks and became valued as a beautiful addition to their flock. Today, the golden laced Brahma are good layers and meat producers too, but they are more valued for their beauty.

So if you want a Brahma that has good egg layers, you must look into their strain. Some strains are good egg layers and will give you up to 300 large brown eggs a year, but most beautiful golden laced brahmas which are specifically bred for their beauty will give you less.

The Dan Powell Buff-Laced Brahmas

Dan Powell is an American breeder-geneticist who strived to create non-standard lines in the Brahma variation. He started the project to start breeding Silver Laced Brahmas and Buff Laced Brahmas in 2000. Buff Laced Brahmas have a light rim on the edge of their feathers which is an unusual design for giant chickens.

Dan Powell’s mission to create these unique buff-laced Brahmas was contrary to the monotonous ugliness of factory-bred chickens. The result of his efforts were birds that were incredibly beautiful as well as good layers of a minimum of 150 eggs a year.

The buff-laced chicken breeds that are known as the Dan Powel Brahmas are a little smaller than regular Brahmas. These special chicken types are very popular in demand since Dan Powel is not in business anymore.
Today, the buff-laced Brahmas can either be golden laced or in any other color like silver or blue.
